Historical context
In the first half of the 20th century, during summer children were unexpectedly getting the polio disease. Then, people gave the name polio season during the summer. During 1921 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the most famous victim of the polio virus.At the age of 39, he contracted the disease and was one of the thousands of people who was affected that year. In the early 1950s,Jonas Salk (a national hero) had made a vaccine for the dreaded polio virus . After Jonas Salk announced the vaccine, Albert Bruce Sabin introduced an oral vaccine for polio and replaced Salk’s vaccine in the 1960s. Although the disease was finally brought under control because of these vaccines, the science behind them fired debate that continues to this day.
