BackgroundJonas Salk was born in October 24 1914. At the age of 15 he and his family decided to move to the united states for a better education.
In 1947 Salk accepted a position at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine to establish a Virus Research Laboratory. It took Salk eight years of devotion to find a cure against polio. In 1955 Salk had discovered and announced his vaccine against polio. In 1963 Salk was funded 20 million dollars by the National Science Foundation to find a cure for AIDS. Jonas Salk died on June 23, 1995 at the age of 80 in La Jolla, California and was memorialized at the Institute with his famous quote: “Hope lies in dreams, in imagination and in the courage of those who dare to make dreams into reality." |
